Who Was Jimmy Capps

Jimmy Capps was one of Nashville's most trusted and beloved guitarists. A North Carolina native who came to town with a guitar and a dream, he went on to become a cornerstone of the Grand Ole Opry house band and a first call session player in Music City.

Known as "The Man In Back," Jimmy quietly supported the biggest names in country music, adding tasteful electric and acoustic parts that elevated every song he touched. His playing was smooth, expressive, and always in service of the singer and the song.

From television tapings to studio dates to live shows, Jimmy's guitar was a constant presence in country music for more than six decades.

Ask anyone who worked with Jimmy Capps, and they will tell you the same thing. Yes, he was a world class musician. But first and foremost, he was a kind, humble, and gracious man.

Friends and fellow artists have remembered Jimmy as:

  • "Humble, kind, gracious and warm"
  • "One of the nicest, most humble musicians I have ever met"
  • "A real gentleman... just being around him made you want to be a better person"

He carried himself with quiet confidence, always putting others first and letting the music shine. This guitar project is about honoring that spirit just as much as his notes.

The Music He Helped Create

Even if you do not know Jimmy's name, you know his sound. His fingerprints are on some of the most loved country songs of all time.

Feature list:

  • "Stand By Your Man" - Tammy Wynette
  • "The Gambler" - Kenny Rogers
  • "He Stopped Loving Her Today" - George Jones
  • "Amarillo By Morning" - George Strait
  • "Here In The Real World" - Alan Jackson
  • "Elvira" - The Oak Ridge Boys

And many more recordings with artists like Reba McEntire, Conway Twitty, Charley Pride, Barbara Mandrell, John Denver, Ronnie Milsap, and more. At one point in his career, Jimmy averaged around 520 recording sessions a year, a testament to how trusted and in demand he was.

"In 2014, Jimmy was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame and the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame, further cementing his place in music history."
